  17. WHAT'S NEW IN PRINTER'S APPRENTICE 6.52
  18. ---------------------------------------
  19. Listed below are all fixes and enhancements made to
  20. Printer's Apprentice since version 6.50.
  21.  
  22.  - Fixed "Divide by Zero" error that occured when trying to install
  23.    just one TrueType font.
  24.  
  25.  - Placed error checking code in effort to fix "Overflow" errors some
  26.    users encountered at startup.
  27.  
  28.  - Placed error checking code in effort to fix "Subscript out of bounds" 
  29.    errors some folks have encountered when installing fonts.
  30.  
  31.  - Added a new specimen sheet. The 72 Point Character Set prints
  32.    a table of alphabet and numeric characters at 72 points.
  33.  
  34.  - Added a new Select button to the Print/Install/Print from CD
  35.    dialogs. When you click the new Select button, a menu drops
  36.    down offering choices to select All, Regular, Bold, Italic,
  37.    BoldItalic and None. This is response to lots of user feedback.
  38.    Many users wanted a way to select all the Regular fonts at once.
  39.  
  40.  - Fixed progress bar in the Install Fonts Wizard. As it looped
  41.    through the fonts to install, it would display 5%, 10%, 5%, 2%
  42.    and other erratic patterns.
  43.  
  44.  - Added links on the menu to the Lose Your Mind Developement
  45.    home page.
  46.  
  47.  - Fixed a discrepancy between printing installed and uninstalled 
  48.    fonts. On the Installed version of any catalog, the "(TrueType)"
  49.    text next to a TT font was not being printed.
  50.  
  51.  - Install Fonts and Print Fonts from CD-ROM Dialog Bug Fixes
  52.    - (Install only) - If a selected font file already exists in 
  53.      your windows\fonts folder, you could get a "subscript out
  54.      range" error. 
  55.  
  56.    - If you selected a directory of TTF files and some
  57.      of those font files were currently installed, upon returning
  58.      to the main PA window, those fonts would not be displayed or
  59.      available in PA or other Windows apps. (In other words,
  60.      installed fonts were being inadvertantly uninstalled by PA)
  61.  
  62.    - When reading a directory or changing a directory, the full 
  63.      status message above the progress bar was not being displayed.
  64.  
  65.    - Several users noted that it can take a few moments to 
  66.      close this window and return to the main PA window. We have 
  67.      tried to tweak this routine and added a "Cleaning up..." 
  68.      message to the Install/Print window.
  69.  
  70.    - Fixed a bug in the Filter drop down listbox. If you had the 
  71.      directory filtered, then printed a catalog or sample sheets,
  72.      then click the << Previous buttons to go back and change
  73.      your filter, the filter would no longer work. Each time the 
  74.      filter is changed, it resulted in a "No font files" list.

  83.  - Fixed MAJOR bugs in the Install Font Routines
  84.    1) The list of the changes to the Registry was incorrect
  85.    2) Selected fonts were not being installed correctly.

  87.  - Fixed bug that would not let you print on letter sized paper
  88.    with a LaserWriter IIg printer.

  90. 03/22/97 - Printer's Apprentice Beta #14
  91.  - Fixed Filter combo box on CD-ROM Font Wizard dialog so 
  92.    it filters on font name, instead of file name.
  93.  - Fixed bug in Print dialog box. If you selected all the 
  94.    sample sheets, you got an error message asking you to 
  95.    select a sample sheet.
  96.  - Fixed Print Dialog and CD-ROM Font Wizard dialog so they
  97.    both say "Ready to print!" when a batch job is finished.
  98.  - Fonts are now sorted by font name in lists in Print and
  99.    CD-ROM Font Wizard dialog boxes.
  100.  - Fixed "Overflow" error that occured after launching
  101.    Adobe Type Manager and the Control Panel from PA on 
  102.    some computer systems.
  103.  - In the CD-ROM Font Wizard, if you selected to print a 
  104.    Character Set sheet you got an ANSI Sheet, and vice versa.
  105.    This has been fixed.
  106.  - Many typos fixed in help file.
  107.  - A4 Support - Fixed Catalog 1 so footer line does not overwrite
  108.    sample text
  109.  - A4 Support - Tested all font catalogs and sample sheets with A4
  110.    paper. You can still tell the formatting is for 8 1/2 by 11 
  111.    paper, but the information gets printed with no formatting 
  112.    problems. Future versions of Printer's Apprentice will fix the
  113.    layout so the text is actually centered on the page, regardless
  114.    of papers size.

  116. 03/15/97 - Printer's Apprentice Beta #13
  117.  - Added a progress dialog box when you select File|Print.
  118.    Behind the scenes, PA must evaluate every single font on
  119.    the system, so this process can take a few seconds. The 
  120.    dialog box helps gaurd against "freeze up fear." (Special
  121.    request from A.B. C)
  122.  
  123.  - Fixed a bug in the Uninstall dialog box. Moving or copying
  124.    a font file to a:\ did not work correctly. No error was
  125.    displayed, the font would just not get copied there.

  128.  - Fixed Character Set tab on main window so it updates
  129.    when menu items are selected from the Character menu.

  131.  - Updated preview graphic of Character Set printout in

  176.  - NEW FEATURE - Sorting! When printing fonts, you can now 
  177.    sort by Font Name or Font File Name. The sorting options
  178.    are available from the Options dialog box.

  180.  - NEW FEATURE - You can now change the size of the information
  181.    text below the printed font on Catalog I, II and the two column
  182.    catalogs. To change the size, select Options from the Tools menu,
  183.    click the Catalogs tab. The new setting is on this tab.

  185.  - NEW FONT CATALOG - I have added a new and improved Two Column
  186.    Catalog. The old one is now called Two Column II. This new one
  187.    is Two Column I.

  210.  - DeskJet fixes: We got a loaner HP DeskJet 660Cse printer and 
  211.    fixed many incompatabilities between DeskJets and Printer's
  212.    Apprentice.

  214.     - Uninstalled fonts can now be printed. 
  215.     - Catalog I: Fixed code so bottom rule line does not
  216.       overwrite the footers and page numbers
  217.     - Sample Sheet IV: Fixed code so box around page lines
  218.       up correctly on along bottom. It now no longer prints
  219.       the "dangling" vertical lines below the bottom horizontal
  220.       line.
  221.     - Three Up Catalog: Fixed problem with Title text printing
  222.       on one page and the rest of the page on a second page.

  224.  - Updated readme.txt with a list of support OCX/DLL files used
  225.    by Printer's Apprentice.

  227.  - Fixed code so "Oblique" fonts are correctly printed on both
  228.    catalogs and sample sheets (Thanks to BS for the help)

  230.  - Fixed tab index problems on Print and Options dialog. The tab
  231.    key will now move from field to field in correct order.

  233.  - When you select File|Print, whichever font is currently
  234.    selected in the main window will be highlighted and 
  235.    selected in the File|Print dialog box. (Previously,
  236.    the font would be selected, but perhaps not visible in the
  237.    list box, you would have to scroll to see it.)

  239.  - ATM 3.0/4/0: Fixed code in File|Print dialog that caused 
  240.    italic/bold/bolditalic/etc variations of an Adobe font to
  241.    print as Regular repeatedly in catalogs. For example, four 
  242.    variations of Adobe Caslon were selected, but Adobe Caslon
  243.    Regular would print 4 times. (Thanks to SK)

  245.  - Added "Whats This" help to the Install and Print Uninstalled
  246.    fonts dialog boxes.
  247.  - Fixed bugs in printing code. "Nag" message was not printing
  248.    on page footers when running unregistered version.
  249.  - Fixed code on CD-ROM Font Wizard / Install Wizard so code that
  250.    detects installed fonts is a bit smarter. For example, it had a
  251.    tough time picking up "Lucida Console" as an installed font. (JN)
  252.  - Fixed Pick Directory dialog so it did not show up as a task
  253.    in the Windows 95 task bar.
  254.  - The dialog that lets you print uninstall fonts is now called 
  255.    the "CD-ROM Font Wizard"
  256.  - Fixed a bug that caused the Print Wizard and CD-ROM Font Wizard
  257.    to print 2 lines of a catalog even when you only selected one
  258.    font to print.
  259.  - Fixed a bug in the Install Wizard. After installing fonts,
  260.    the "flying windows" symbol, indicating a font is installed,
  261.    was being displayed next to the wrong font in the font list.

  263.  - Fixed keyboard window so it properly displays the correct font
  264.    when initially loaded. (Thanks to PM for pointing this out).
  265.    Also fixed a variety of minor problems in the keyboard window.
  266.  - Fixed a bug that caused the single character tab view not
  267.    to show the current font if you changed the font while in
  268.    the character set tab.
  269.  - Fixed a bug in the Remove Font Wizard that caused an
  270.    additional entry to appear in the task bar.
  271.  - Fixed obscure bug that caused a "File Already Open" error
  272.    when loading the Options dialog from the Print dialog
  273.  - Fixed code that did not remove "Unregistered" nag message on 
  274.    bottom of main window when a correct registration code was
  275.    entered.

  278. 01/23/97 - Printer's Apprentice Beta #8
  279.  - Added Lose Your Mind Development web URL to the Printer's
  280.    Apprentice group on the Start menu.
  281.  - Fixed some more sections of code that can cause a descrepancy
  282.    between the point size of the single character sample, the
  283.    size scroll bar and the size list box.
  284.  - Added "Uninstall Printer's Apprentice" to Start menu. Previously,
  285.    the uninstaller was only available from the Add/Remove Programs
  286.    Control Panel, which is a bit obscure.
  287.  - Fixed top row of keys on Keyboard window to display properly
  288.    when the form is first displayed. This bug popped up due to 
  289.    changes I made to the keyboard in Beta #7.
  290.  - Fixed bug in About box that would cause PA not to change to 
  291.    the Registered version after entering a valid Registration code
  292.    and closing the About box.
  293.  - Small improvments in screen redraw speed and in reducing
  294.    flickering problems.
  295.  - Improved speed of deselecting fonts with the Deselect All
  296.    button in the File Print dialog.
  297.  - Added a Frequently Asked Questions section to the Help file.
  298.  - Added a jump to the Help menu that links to the FAQ section 
  299.    in the Help file.

  301. 12/29/96 - Printer's Apprentice Beta #7
  302.  - Added contect sensitive, pop up help for individual controls 
  303.    on many of the dialog boxes. This feature places a small 
  304.    question mark button on the right side of dialog box caption 
  305.    bars. Click the button and your cursor will change to a 
  306.    question mark arrow (it may be different if you have 
  307.    customized cursors). Then click a control on the dialog box 
  308.    to see pop up help.
  309.

  311.    Let me know if the help text is not clear, is misspelled, etc.

  313.    Pop up help is not implemented in the 'Intall' and 'Print
  314.    uninstalled fonts' dialogs.

  316.  - File Print Setup has been fixed. Changes you make will actually
  317.    take. For instance, if you use the dialog box to turn on 
  318.    duplex printing, Printer's Apprentice should now use it. 
  319.    Thanks to BC for pointing this out to me.
  320.  
  321.  - Removed the Office 95 style title bar. The code did not always
  322.    produce the desired results. This eliminates the need for the
  323.    dwsbc32.ocx file in the Printer's Apprentice setup.exe.
  324.  
  325.  - Fixed setup program so INSTALL.LOG is wiped clean for each
  326.    installation.
  327.  
  328.  - Fixed several inconsistencies between the page preview screens
  329.    (in File Print and Print from CD-ROM menus). They are briefly
  330.    noted below
  331.     a) Sample Sheet II - preview right justified title text,
  332.            printed page was centered.
  333.         b) Sample Sheet IV - preview did not show the title text
  334.            that appears on printed page.
  335.         c) ANSI Sheet I - preview showed title as "ANSI Character
  336.            Set <font name>" while printed page had a different
  337.            title.
  338.    Most of the inconsistencies were due to the fact that the 
  339.    preview bitmaps are from older versions. I have replaced or
  340.    updated the preview bitmaps as needed. Thanks to BC for his 
  341.    sharp eye and pointing these issues out.

  343.  - Bug fixes on Sample Sheet II - Font file name was printing twice
  344.    and did not contain the full path name. The full path name is
  345.    printed other sample sheets, so this was a consistency problem.
  346.  
  347.  - Bug fixes on Basic Catalog I - Line spacing was not adjusting
  348.    properly, text was overlapping the headers after page 1, in some
  349.    cases the bottom font sample lines would overwrite the footer
  350.    line. These have been fixed. Thanks to MF for pointing these
  351.    out.
  352.  
  353.  - Bug fix on Basic Catalog II - Line spacing was not adjusting
  354.    properly, causing sample text to overlap the line above it. 
  355.  
  356.  - Bug fixs on Two Column Catalog - The code for this catalog
  357.    was ignoring the "Reset Printer every x Pages" setting from the
  358.    Options dialog box. This option breaks up a print job into a new
  359.    print job every x pages. The two column catalog was also not
  360.    printing selected Quotes correctly. If you selected Quote #2 to
  361.    print, the two column catalog would print it as "Quote2".
  362.    Thanks to TN for his list of suggestions for the two column
  363.    inventory.

  365.  - When the keyboard window is opened, focus is automatically
  366.    placed in the textbox above the keyboard.

  368. 12/10/96 - Printer's Apprentice Beta #6.01
  369.  *This beta was sent directly to a few testers and not publicly
  370.  *posted on the Web site.
  371.  
  372.  - Print dialogs - "Print" buttons are now disabled while a print
  373.    job is currently processing.
  374.  - Main PA window - fixed synchonization problems between the point
  375.    size scroll bars, point size drop down listbox and the various
  376.    tabs. Sometimes the scroll bar would give one point size and the
  377.    drop down listbox would say another point size.
  378.  - Printer's Apprentice now supports installed TrueType fonts that
  379.    physically reside in other directories. This led to a variety of
  380.    small bugs. For example, the TrueType file would be listed on the
  381.    main screen as "c:\windows\fonts\f:\fonts\truetype\times.ttf"
  382.  - Printer's Apprentice now supports FOT files. This lead to
  383.    1) the FOT file being listed on the main PA screen instead of the
  384.    TTF file 2) The FOT or the TTF was listed in printouts of installed
  385.    fonts 3) On printouts of installed fonts, the font file size would
  386.    be reported as 1K. 
  387.  - Hopefully I have gotten rid of "pnlFOT" being printed on the main
  388.    PA screen instead of the TrueType file size.
  389.  - Epson Action Laser 1000 - This particular driver has some
  390.    interesting quirks that led to "Run time error 381" messages. 
  391.    These errors are now fixed.

  394.  - Fixed a bug in displaying font file names and sizes on the 
  395.    main screen. If PA could not determine the name of the font
  396.    file it would display filename/size information for the 
  397.    previous font.
  398.  - Adobe Type Manager toolbar button and Run menu item are only
  399.    displayed if PA detects ATM installed on your system.
  400.  - Fixed pesky run time error number 453 when running Adobe Type 
  401.    Manager either from the menu or from the toolbar on the
  402.    left side of the screen. 
  403.  - Added enhanced error checking to all print functions. This should
  404.    fix the 380 and 381 errors that some testers have been running
  405.    into.
  406.  - Fixed a bug when printing uninstalled fonts. If you printed
  407.    sample sheets for all fonts in a directory, the last font in
  408.    the list was not printed.
  409.  - Added enhanced selection features to printing dialog boxes. Now
  410.    you can use the Shift and Control keys to select ranges of fonts
  411.    in the font name list boxes.
  412.  - Removed need for MHTIP32.OCX. This OCX control added tooltips. 
  413.    Tooltips are now programmed without using the OCX, so the 
  414.    distribution SETUP.EXE is smaller by 72k.
  415.  - Removed need for COMCTL32.OCX. This OCX control provided an easy
  416.    way to access the common dialogs in the operating system. Now we
  417.    go directly through the Windows API.

  427.  - Fixed run-time error '9' when using the Catalog Wizard to print
  428.    uninstalled fonts from a CD or other media.
  429.  - Fixed problems with empty TT entries in the standard Print
  430.    dialog box when using Canon BubbleJet drivers.
  431.  - Fixed run time error number 453 when running Adobe Type 
  432.    Manager either from the menu or from the toolbar on the
  433.    left side of the screen.
  434.  - In some cases italic versions of italic ATM fonts were not being
  435.    listed. (Thanks to RHG)
  436.  - Reduced flickering on main screen for single character and
  437.    character set tabs.
  438.  - Font Install Wizard - after selecting a series of fonts and 
  439.    installing them, the code was not changing the picture in the
  440.    font listbox to the Windows symbol. The Windows symbol denotes
  441.    that the font is installed.
  442.  - Dramatic decrease in system resources used by Printer's Apprentice.
  443.    This will fix the "Error #7 Out of memory" bugs that users have
  444.    been getting when selecting Print from the File menu. 
  445.  - Changed the style of the toolbar and added tooltips (popular
  446.    request)
  447.  - Fixed a bug in the Remove Font Wizard. If you had "confirm deletes"
  448.    checked, the font filename was displayed twice in the "Are you sure"
  449.    dialog box.
  450.  - Added a new "Office 95" style caption bar
  451.

  453.  - Updated TABCTRL32.OCX to the latest version (4.01)
  454.  - Tested PA with a variety of printer drivers that gave some testers
  455.    problems. This should fix the "Run Time Error 5" message.
  456.    Tested printers include HP Series II, Epson Stylus Pro,
  457.    and HP ColorJet 560c
